Figure Drawing Using Constructive Anatomy
and Rhythmic Form Modeling

Location: Toronto
Instructor: Dan Thompson
Duration: 5 days

academy of realist art toronto

This course investigates the human figure in its structural, rhythmic sense and will assist artists in how view a finishing game differently by focusing on topographic, rhythmic lines and forms which are most effective when utilized near the end of a drawing. Shorter, gestural poses will not be used; a week long pose will be set the morning of the first session. In this way, fundamental concerns such as body's action, proportion, perceptual dynamics and tonal harmony may be addressed. On day two, structural drawing concepts will be presented in earnest: orienting the major masses of the figure, using anatomical landmarks to refine shapes, aligning architectonic forms and tonal development. The extended pose of the nude figure will then present a three session challenge to the student, to be devoted to middle and finishing strategies in drawing. Principles which are derived from sculpture will enable the artist to use anatomy, form description, perspective, and weight distribution to find and then analyze the organic, flowing structures of the body. Instruction in both a group setting and in one on one critiques will expand on the still life of the figure and fortify a more creative approach to modeling in the participant's work.
