About ARA Workshops
Group sizes are kept quite small, so each paticipant gets lots of one-on-one attention from our superb instructors. ARA instructors teach year round so, unlike many artists who offer summer/holiday workshops our instructors are professional teachers as well as successful award-winning artists Whether you are an award winning experienced artist or have never painted before, our instructors will tailor to your skill level.

Workshop hours
Most workshops are scheduled five days per week, Monday to Friday, with weekends free (unless otherwise noted). The hours are usually 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but will occasionally go to 5:00 p.m.

Materials list:
CANVAS: two 9 x 12 in.; three 12 x 16 in. and two 16 x 20 in.
The most economical and simple surface to paint on is a standard stretched canvas with acrylic primer. However, for easier transportation and less bulk, panels are recommended. There are a variety of canvas-on-panel, prepared panels, or "canvas boards" available through numerous online retailers. For example, Ampersand™ or Winsor & Newton boards are quite acceptable, and other brands as well can be purchased at Aboveground Art Supplies near ARA.

BRUSHES: Have as many brushes on hand as you wish, but at minimum, you will need:
• 6 (six) Bristle or hog's hair brushes:
2 larger (3/4 to 1 in.) — filbert or bright (square is acceptable)
2 medium — filbert or bright (square)
2 small — filbert or round, for smaller detail
• 5 (five) Soft hair
3 medium — filbert (synthetic mongoose is best — they're springy, not too soft)
2 small — rounds (here you want soft brushes such as Taklon™)

PAINT (oil paint only):
• Titanium White — Winsor & Newton (W&N) or any good brand.
• Yellow Ochre Pale (Winsor & Newton), or Williamsburg Mars Yellow Light
• Lamp Black or Ivory Black
• Ultramarine Blue
• Viridian Green
• Alizarin Crimson Permanent
• Burnt Umber
• Raw Umber
• Burnt Sienna
• Cadmium Red Mid*
*Use true Cadmiums only, not "hues". Although, they are important colours, we don't use much of them! NOTE: Bring whatever other paints you have, just in case.

MEDIUMS AND THINNERS:
• A faster drying medium such as Liquin™, available nearly everywhere, or M. Graham's Walnut/Alkyd Medium (no odour) available at Curry's.
• Small container of odourless mineral spirits (OMS). No turpentine or dammar varnish, please. Note: These will be provided for you if you cannot find the product or if you are travelling by air.

MISCELLANEOUS:
• 2 (two) small cups for medium or mineral spirits, with lids
• Palette knife — a narrow and flexible blade is best
• Palette — Paper palettes (preferably a gray palette) are quick and convenient, but a prepared wooden palette is ideal.
• Roll of paper towels, Shop towels, a Box of tissue, or Clean rag(s)
