Old Masters Painting Online

Follow along with principal instructor Fernando Freitas in this step-by-step instructional video as he executes a master copy of William Bouguereau’s portrait painting “Disdain.”

Bouguereau was famously known for his superlative draftsmanship, as well as his subtle fleshes. We investigate the world of this amazing 19th century French Academic painter in this thorough video. The same method can be applied to produce an exact copy of any painting of your choice.

The demonstration begins with dry brush drawing directly onto the canvas, and then proceeds into the ebauche (local colour) layer. Next, we follow along through first painting, building form and edges. Finally, we polish the painting with the final glazes to obtain a luminous and brushless finish.

This video is broken into the following chapters, providing detailed instructions every step of the way:

  • Introduction and Materials
  • Dry Brush Drawing
  • Palette and Colour Mixing
  • Dead Colour
  • First Painting
  • Second Painting

This video is for anyone interested in developing their painting skills. Whether you are a beginner or advanced student, amateur or professional artist, the results will be beyond your expectations. This is a lasting reference with over 2 hours of footage that you will want to revisit again and again.
