In this workshop, participants will be working from a live model while learning an efficient and expressive approach to painting or drawing. With this direct method of painting, students will be instructed step-by-step through the process of painting or drawing a “finished” portrait sketch.

Students will learn how to start straight on the canvas with a dry brush drawing and follow that with how to place colours and brushstrokes in a concise way that will achieve all the complexity and forms of the portrait. They will also experience how to play with thinner and thicker layers of paint to convey form and texture as well as colour mixing of flesh tones using the limited Zorn palette.

If the student decides to draw they will be taken through the same steps of how to build the portrait just with a different medium.

This workshop will leave the participant with more confidence painting or drawing in an expressive manner while still maintaining the look of an academic portrait painting.

The class will meet at 2446 Bank St, Suite 206, Ottawa from 10 am – 4 pm each day.

Full workshop price is $450 (model fee included), and a $150 deposit is required to save your spot. The balance will be due on the first day of the workshop.
