Still Life
Location: Torontoand Ottawa
Instructor: Juan Martinez
Duration: 7 days
This intensive, seven-day still life workshop explores the use of light, colour, and texture in a style similar to the Dutch and Flemish masters. As students learn to paint a beautiful still life using classic methods, they are introduced to valuable Old Master concepts such as massing of tonal values, chiaroscuro, "selective focus”, and layering to achieve a luminous picture.

Materials list:
CANVAS: One 12 x 16 in. and one 10 x 14 in.
and if you wish, a slightly larger size.
Canvas: The most economical and simple surface to paint on is a standard canvas with acrylic gesso. However, for still
life painting, a preferable surface is smooth. So, if you have the time, you can improve your canvas by applying a couple
of coats of acrylic gesso from Golden and lightly sanding to make it smoother. Easier would be to acquire a pregessoed
panel such as Gessoboard® from Ampersand. These are available at Aboveground Art Supplies and DeSerres in
Toronto. Another good choice, made of
oil primed linen on panel, is from http://www.newtraditionsartpanels.com/
But they need to be ordered well ahead of time. At these sizes, even the finest panels are not too expensive.
BRUSHES: Have as many brushes on hand as you can, but at minimum, you will need:

4 medium sized (1/2 in to 1/4 in)— filbert or square
