This 3-day workshop is designed for anyone interested in exploring Alla Prima still life painting from direct observation and is suitable for all levels of experience.

Students will discover how to transform everyday objects into a painterly composition while strengthening their understanding of composition, lighting, and colour relationships. They will be encouraged to create a different composition each day to help them stay loose and avoid overworking the painting. The essence of a beautiful alla prima painting lies in maintaining an effortless quality, which develops through repetition and practice.

Students will learn how to visually simplify a still life into abstract shapes to establish accurate drawing and a strong composition. Through the use of contrasting values, hard and soft edges, and confident brushwork, they will build convincing form, depth, and atmosphere. Emphasis will also be placed on using expressive brushstrokes to capture a variety of textures and surfaces.

All fabrics and still life objects will be provided. Students are welcome to bring additional subject matter, such as flowers or fruit, to include in their still life arrangement.

The class will meet at our studio from 10 am – 4 pm ET each day.

Full workshop price is $450,and a $150 deposit is required to save your easel. The balance will be due on the first day of the workshop.
