In this workshop, participants will be working from the nude while learning an efficient and expressive approach to painting with a limited palette. In this shorthand/direct method of painting, students will be instructed step-by-step through the process of painting a “finished” figure sketch.
Students will learn how to start straight on the canvas with a dry brush drawing and follow that with how to place colours and brushstrokes in a concise way that will achieve all the complexity and forms of the figure. They will also experience how to play with thinner and thicker layers of paint to convey
form and texture as well as colour mixing of flesh tones using the limited Zorn palette.
This workshop will leave the participant with more confidence painting in an expressive manner while still maintaining the look of an academic figure painting.
The class will meet in our studio from 10 am – 4 pm each day.
This workshop will be instructed by ARA resident artist Miriam Rosenthal. Miriam is a painter and draftsman based out of Toronto. She graduated from the Academy of Realist Art, and during her time studying she was awarded two scholarships from the ARA, as well as a highly regarded scholarship from the Art Renewal Center. Her work as been featured in multiple shows and is also now in a few private collections.
