In this two-day workshop, students can learn the art of drybrush drawing/underpainting. Whether it’s through subtle scumbling on canvas or building up the lights with lead white, underpainting is an integral part of classical-style oil painting. This workshop is designed to be beneficial for both beginners and experienced painters alike. Beginners will gain a solid foundation in essential techniques, while experienced artists will have the opportunity to refine their skills and explore new approaches. Working from a live model, Miriam Rosenthal will guide students through the basics of drawing a portrait: structure, proportion, and shading using just raw umber and mineral spirits. Through a series of thin layers and subtle accents of white, students will leave this workshop with the ability to create a beautiful tonal “drawing” in paint.

The class will meet at our studio from 10 am – 4 pm ET each day.

Full workshop price is $425, and a $150 deposit is required to save your easel. The balance will be due on the first day of the workshop.
